Murchison Falls National Park, located in northwestern Uganda, is the country’s largest and oldest conservation area. The park is named after the spectacular Murchison Falls, where the mighty Nile River is forced through a narrow 7-meter gorge before plunging into a powerful waterfall—one of the most dramatic natural sights in Africa.

The park offers a rich variety of wildlife and landscapes, from savannah plains and riverine forests to wetlands and the Nile Delta. It is home to over 76 mammal species, including elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, and the rare Rothschild’s giraffe. More than 450 bird species make it a paradise for birdwatchers.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in the far southwest of Uganda, is the country’s smallest national park but one of its most spectacular. It forms part of the larger **Virunga Conservation Area, which Uganda shares with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The park is renowned for being home to the endangered **mountain gorillas, and visitors can trek to meet the habituated Nyakagezi gorilla family—a remarkable, intimate wildlife experience. Mgahinga is also one of the best places in Africa to encounter the rare and playful golden monkeys.

Mgahinga stands out for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, dominated by the towering Virunga Volcanoes—Muhavura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. Adventurous travelers can hike these peaks for breathtaking views across three countries.

Kibale National Park, located in western Uganda, is one of Africa’s top destinations for primate viewing and is often called the “Primate Capital of the World.” The park protects one of Uganda’s most diverse tropical rainforests and is especially famous for its large population of chimpanzees, with over 1,500 individuals.

The highlight of Kibale is chimpanzee trekking, where visitors follow experienced guides into the forest to observe chimp families in their natural habitat. The park is also home to 13 different primate species, including red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and the rare Uganda mangabey.

Beyond primates, Kibale supports rich biodiversity with more than 350 bird species, forest elephants, duikers, and a variety of butterflies and tree species. Its lush landscape of evergreen rainforest, swamps, and crater lakes creates a serene environment ideal for nature walks, birding, and cultural encounters with nearby communities.

Lake Naivasha is at the highest elevation of the Kenyan Rift valley at 1,884 metres (6,181 ft) in a complex geological combination of volcanic rocks and sedimentary deposits from a larger Pleistocene Era lake. Apart from transient streams, the lake is fed by the perennial Malewa and Gilgil rivers. There is no visible outlet, but since the lake water is relatively fresh it is assumed to have an underground outflow.[2]

The lake had a normal surface area of 139 square kilometres (54 sq mi)[3] before 2010 and had increased to 198 square kilometres (76 sq mi) by 2020.[4] It is surrounded by a swamp which covers an area of 64 square kilometres (25 sq mi), but this can vary largely depending on rainfall. Situated at an altitude of 1,884 metres (6,181 ft),[3] the lake has an average depth of 6 metres (20 ft), with the deepest area being at Crescent Island, with a maximum depth of 30 metres (98 ft).[3] Njorowa Gorge once formed the lake's outlet, but it is now high above the lake and forms the entrance to Hell's Gate National Park. The town of Naivasha (formerly East Nakuru) lies on the north-east edge of the lake.
